The idea that Walmart destroys jobs is false. One example was when Walmart opened a store in East Peoria. Soon there were two gas stations and three restaurants open right around it.

As a democrat and a retailer, my feelings regarding Walmart are mixed. From a business perspective, Walmart is easy to beat, if you sell high demand products not on Walmart shelves and in markets not served by Walmart, e.g., tourist markets. Personally, Walmart is appreciated for redefining the pharmaceutical industry several years ago by offering generic drugs for $4.00/month and by allowing physicians to rewrite scripts so patients could take advantage of these prices. I save over $1000 yearly in drug costs and those savings allow me to spend it elsewhere. That said, Walmart has aggressively fought unions to the detriment of its employees (telling part time employees that could get health care coverage thru medicaid is rather pathetic), and has refused to settle legal claims that had real merit, (e.g., "the plaintiff, your honor, pulled these two hundred pound shelves down onto themselves purposely." Yea, right.
